Impact Glass

Material and operation: Impact Glass (Hurricane Glass) is made of 2 layers of glass and have a thin sheet of laminate between them. Like a car’s windshield, the Impact glass can be destroyed, but the sheet of laminate prevents shattering of the glass.

Protection against Hurricanes : Impact Glass is installed permanently, so your home is protected perfectly against Hurricanes, when you at home or not.

Protection against burglary: Burglars typically crack the lock system, that’s the weak point of a door and a window, not the glass.

Energy efficiency, privacy, noise reduction: There are different qualities of Impact Glass available. Energy efficient (Low-E) Impact Glass have a 3rd layer of glass to minimize solar heat gain. For additional costs the glass can be tinted to screen the window from view and to reduce solar heat transmission. Thicker glass or a 4th layer of glass reduce the noise from outside significantly.

Size restriction and ornament facade: Impact windows are available for the most windows openings, entrance doors as well as Patio Sliders made of Impact Glass are available too. Ornament facades stay untouched, special forms like half-circle windows are available.

Durability and Maintenance: Like a car windshield, impact Glass is not unbreakable. Windows and doors made of Impact Glass needs quite the same maintenance and provide the same durability as a high quality standard window or door.

Costs: Depends on your preferences, Impact Windows costs starts at $75 per sq ft installed for common Impact Windows up to $100 per sq ft installed for high end quality.

Recommendation: Although the most expensive solution, Impact Glass is the perfect hurricane protection for new windows and doors, especially for artistic house facade with ornaments, columns or arches.

Impact Glass is recommended especially for new buildings or renovation projects when the existing windows have to replace.

Choose the perfect Hurricane Protection System - depends on your preferences!

Impact glass, Roller Shutter, Accordion Shutter or Storm panels, off course all these systems are certified by the State of Florida and an effective Hurricane protection.

Roller Shutters (Roll downs)

Material and operation: Roller Shutters (Roll downs) are made of aluminum. A Roller Shutter can protect a standard window, a door or a patio area. A Roller Shutter usually is motorized and operated wired switch or a wireless remote control. An automatic up– and down programming is available, a “smart home edition” allows operating by your smartphone too.

Protection against Hurricanes and burglary: A Roller Shutter is installed permanently, so when you have rolled down the Shutter with a finger touch your home is protected perfectly against Hurricanes and burglaries.

Energy efficiency, privacy, noise reduction: The aluminum slats reduce the solar heat gain and transmission as well as the noise from outside significantly. Furthermore the aluminum slats are opaque.

Size restriction and ornament facade: Roller Shutters are available for big span patios or windows up to 240” (20’ or 6.09m). For additional costs the Roller Shutter can be ordered in each color. Most time the Shutter box can be installed hidden in the soffit or completely invisible between the lintel and the window frame yet, but typically the Shutter system is visible

Durability and Maintenance: The aluminum parts are durable for a lifetime. The motor has a guarantee of 5 years. There is no maintenance necessary except changing the battery for a wireless remote control.

Costs: A standard motorized Roller Shutter costs $30 per sq ft installed.

Recommendation: Roller Shutters are the perfect solution for Patios and to protect existing windows and doors, when the existing windows and glass doors are too good to replace them. But even for new buildings or window replacement projects the bundle “High performance non-impact window with an integrated Roller Shutter” is an option you have to consider.

Storm Panels
Material and operation: Storm Panels are made of polycarbonate, steel or aluminum. They are mounted with wingnuts on steel tracks or channels which are permanently bolted to the facade of the house. Usually the panels are stored in the garage, but when a Hurricane is announced someone has to install the panels on the tracks.

Protection against Hurricanes and burglary: Storm Panels are durable, there is no maintenance necessary.

Energy efficiency, privacy, noise reduction: Because a Storm Panel usually is stored in the garage, there are no additional benefits provided.

Size restriction and ornament facade: Storm Panels are available in big sizes too, but you have to consider the weight and the bulkiness of the panels as well as the accessibility when you think about using this kind of Hurricane protection. The tracks for Storm Panels can be installed in a way that ornament facades are interfered only a little bit.

Costs: Storm Panels costs around $8 per sq ft installed.

Recommendation: We recommend Storm Panels for permanent residents as the cheapest solution to protect your windows and glass doors at the 1st floor.

Accordion Shutters

Material and operation: Accordion Shutters are made of polycarbonate, steel or aluminum.  The hinged panels housed in a box which is bolted to either side of a window. This Hurricane protection is permanently installed, and when an Hurricane is announced the homeowner has to unfolding the Accordion Shutters and locking them.

Protection against Hurricanes and burglary: An Accordion Shutter is installed permanently, but usually folded in the box. So you have to unfold and lock the Accordion Shutter when a Hurricane is announced.
Energy efficiency, privacy, noise reduction: Because the Accordion Shutter usually is folded in the box, there are no additional benefits provided.

Size restriction and ornament facade: Accordion Shutters are available for big span windows too, but due to the fact that you have to unfold and lock them manually there is an individual feasibility limit of the size.

Durability and Maintenance: Accordion Shutters are durable, there is no maintenance necessary.

Costs: An Accordion Shutter costs around $20 per sq ft installed.

Recommendation: We recommend Accordion Shutters for permanent residents as an affordable solution to protect your windows at the 1st floor. Accordion Shutters has a guide rail on the bottom side, that’s why we don’t recommend Accordion Shutters for doors or patios.
